Treated vs Stained Decks: Which Is Right for Texas Weather?

When you order a deck from Hershy Decks, one of your first choices is: treated or stained?

Both options use quality lumber. Both will last for years. Both look great. But they have different characteristics, different price points, and different maintenance requirements.

Here's everything you need to know to make the right choice for your Texas home.

Understanding the Options

Treated Wood

What it is: Pressure-treated lumber that's been infused with preservatives to resist rot, insects, and fungal decay.

The look: Fresh treated wood has a greenish tint that weathers over time to a natural gray. Some people love this weathered look; others prefer to stain it later.

Cost: Our most affordable option.

Stained Wood

What it is: The same pressure-treated lumber, but with a professional-grade stain applied at our shop before delivery.

The look: Rich, warm brown tones. More polished and finished appearance from day one.

Cost: Slightly higher than treated, typically $20-30 more per month.

The stain upgrade costs roughly $15-30 more per month depending on deck size. For many homeowners, that's worth it for the premium appearance.

Appearance Over Time

Treated Wood: The Natural Evolution

Day 1: Greenish tint, fresh lumber look.

Months 1-6: The green fades. Wood starts to lighten.

Year 1-2: Wood takes on a silvery-gray weathered appearance.

Year 2+: Continues to weather to a consistent gray. This is the natural state of outdoor wood.

Some homeowners love this progression—it's rustic, natural, and requires zero effort. Others find it looks "worn" or "old" even on a new deck.

Your options with treated wood:

  1. Let it weather naturally (no maintenance, gray appearance)

  2. Apply stain yourself after 3-6 months of weathering

  3. Have it professionally stained later

Stained Wood: The Maintained Look

Day 1: Rich brown tones, finished appearance.

Year 1-2: Stain holds up well, especially in protected areas. High-traffic and sun-exposed areas may show some wear.

Year 2-3: Depending on exposure and use, you may want to refresh the stain.

Ongoing: Re-stain every 2-4 years to maintain the rich color.

Stained wood keeps its "new" look longer, but it does require periodic maintenance to stay that way.

Texas Weather Considerations

Central Texas throws a lot at outdoor wood:

UV Exposure

Our intense Texas sun breaks down wood fibers and fades finishes faster than in cloudier climates.

Treated wood: UV causes graying, but the wood itself handles sun well.

Stained wood: The stain provides UV protection, slowing the breakdown of wood fibers. However, the stain itself will fade over time and need refreshing.

Verdict: Stain offers better UV protection for the wood, but requires maintenance to maintain that protection.

Heat

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F. Hot surfaces, thermal expansion/contraction, and extreme conditions stress wood.

Treated wood: Handles heat well. No finish to bubble or peel.

Stained wood: Quality exterior stains handle heat, but extreme conditions can accelerate wear.

Verdict: Both handle heat fine. Slight edge to treated for zero-maintenance durability.

Rain and Moisture

Sudden thunderstorms, humidity, and occasional flooding are part of Texas life.

Treated wood: The treatment protects against rot and decay even with significant moisture exposure.

Stained wood: Stain helps repel water, keeping it from penetrating the wood surface. This can extend overall wood life.

Verdict: Both handle moisture well. Stain adds an extra layer of water resistance.

Overall for Texas

For Texas weather specifically:

  • Treated works great if you're okay with the weathered gray look or plan to stain it yourself later

  • Stained provides additional protection and looks more polished, but requires periodic re-staining

Neither is wrong—it's about your preferences and willingness to maintain.

Maintenance Requirements

Treated Wood Maintenance

Required:

  • Basic cleaning (sweep debris, occasional hose-down)

  • Annual inspection for any issues

Optional:

  • Apply water-repellent sealer every 2-4 years (slows weathering)

  • Apply stain after initial weathering period (changes appearance)

Time commitment: Minimal. An hour or two of cleaning per year is sufficient if you're okay with natural weathering.

Stained Wood Maintenance

Required:

  • Basic cleaning (sweep debris, occasional hose-down)

  • Annual inspection for any issues

  • Re-staining every 2-4 years to maintain appearance and protection

Re-staining process:

  1. Clean deck thoroughly

  2. Light sanding of rough areas

  3. Apply new coat of stain

  4. Allow to dry

Time commitment: Moderate. The re-staining process takes a weekend every few years.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Treated If:

You prefer low maintenance You don't want to worry about re-staining. You'd rather let nature take its course.

You like the weathered look Gray, rustic, natural—if that appeals to you, treated wood gets there on its own.

Budget is the priority Treated is our most affordable option. If you're stretching to afford a deck, save the stain upgrade cost.

You plan to stain it yourself Some homeowners prefer to apply their own stain after the deck has weathered. This lets you choose your exact color and do it on your timeline.

It's in a low-visibility location A side deck or back area that doesn't need to look polished might not need the stain upgrade.

Choose Stained If:

Appearance matters to you If you want your deck to look finished and polished from day one, stain delivers that.

You're willing to maintain it Re-staining every few years isn't for everyone, but if you're the type who maintains things, it's not a big deal.

The deck is a focal point A front porch or main entertaining area might warrant the upgraded appearance.

You want maximum wood protection The stain adds an extra layer of UV and moisture protection.

You don't want to stain it yourself Having us apply the stain means it's done professionally, evenly, and you don't have to deal with it.

The Hybrid Approach

Some customers take a middle path:

Order treated now, stain later

  1. Order a treated deck (save money upfront)

  2. Let it weather for 3-6 months (wood needs to dry before accepting stain)

  3. Apply stain yourself when you're ready (or hire someone)

This approach:

  • Gets you a deck sooner at lower cost

  • Lets you choose your exact stain color later

  • Spreads out the cost and effort

The downside: you have to do the staining yourself or pay someone, and the deck won't look "finished" until you do.

A Note on Quality

Regardless of which you choose, the underlying lumber is the same quality pressure-treated wood. The treatment that protects against rot and insects is identical.

Stain is an enhancement to appearance and surface protection—it doesn't change the fundamental quality of the deck structure.

Both options will last 20+ years with proper care. The choice is really about aesthetics and maintenance preference, not durability.

The Bottom Line

Treated wood: Lower cost, zero-maintenance option that weathers to gray. Great if you like the natural look or prefer minimal upkeep.

Stained wood: Higher cost, better initial appearance, requires periodic re-staining. Great if you want a polished look and don't mind occasional maintenance.

Neither choice is wrong. It's about what matters to you: budget vs. appearance, low-maintenance vs. maintained beauty.
